There are a lot of people who are interested in raw feeding but are confused about how to get started and what to feed.  It does not have to be so confusing.  At Genesis Naturally we have created some products which help take the guess work out of what to feed.  Our prepared mixes (Breeder's mix, musher's mix and Breeder's Choice) and ground meats make raw feeding easy and convenient.  We recommend you make the switch from kibble to raw quickly.  Because dog's digest kibble and raw food differently it's best not to combine the two.  If you choose to feed both kibble and raw we recommend you separate these meals i.e raw in the morning, kibble in the evening.

A raw diet basically consists of meat, bones, organs (offal) and if you choose fruits and vegetables.  We have added parsley to our Breeder's Mix and spinach, apples and carrot to our Breeder's Choice.  We have also added whole raw eggs (including shells which are a great source of calcium) to both of these mixes.

A basic outline for raw feeding consists of feeding a dog 2-3% of his body weight daily.  The following chart will outline what those amounts should approximately be.

Size of dog Amount of food to feed in lbs/ozs daily
5lb dog 0.1-0.15lbs  or  1.6-2.4 ounces
10lb dog 0.2-0.3lbs or 3.2 - 4.8 ounces
20lb dog 0.4-0.6lbs  or   6.4 - 9.6 ounces
50lb dog 1-1.5lbs daily
100lb dog 2-3lbs daily

As with any living creature, each dog will burn calories faster or slower depending on their metabolism and energy level.  If you find your dog is gaining weight...cut back on their food intake, if they're losing increase it.  You will want to feed your dog a diet that is based on meaty bones. Chicken, turkey and pork will offer your best and most affordable options.  Our dogs eat a diet that consists of approximately 40% meaty bones.  Beef bones are not recommended as they are harder and not as digestible.  We offer large beef bones for recreational chewing to our own dogs.  Muscle meat should make up a good portion of your dog's diet as well...that would also include tripe.  We feed our dogs a diet that consists of 50% green tripe.  Offal is a mixture of inner organs that is a necessary part of your dog's diet.  Approximately 10% of your animals diet should be made up of inner organs.  You can add more heart as this is also a muscle meat.   Adding ground green leafy vegetables and whole raw eggs will provide your dog with necessary vitamins and minerals.

If all this sounds too confusing, simply purchase one of our pre-mixed blends and feed the required amount daily.
